THOUSANDS OF SOUTH AFRICANS GATHER AT UNION BUILDINGS

Freedom day is annually celebrated on the 27th of April. This is a South African celebration that represents the South African non-racial elections of 1994. This historical day marks the end of apartheid, segregation and the rule of white minority. It is basically an establishment of democracy and a new government that was led by Mr Nelson Mandela.

This year freedom day was on a Saturday, from my own opinion it felt like a normal day, it was just like any other day because it was on a Saturday. Saturday is part of a weekend, but that doesn’t mean that we as South Africans should forget about this day.

This is the reason why thousands of South Africans gathered at the union buildings on Saturday. The celebration of this year was themed under “ Mobolising society towards consolidating our democracy and freedom.” This theme explains that we as South Africans need to work as one, we need to join hands in making South Africa a better country to live in.

This is the day where we as South Africans reflect at what happened in the past and look at what we have achieved as a nation. Much has changed since 1994, but there is still much that has to be done in South Africa.

Freedom day is about better our lives and this means everyone. This day is not only about freedom, democracy and human rights, it is also about what makes us South Africans.
Our struggles to overcome apartheid show the value of freedom to most South Africans!
